DIAMOND GRADING

Clarity

This is a measure of tiny (usually microscopic) inclusions ("flaws") that neither mar the diamond's beauty nor endanger its durability. However, some inclusions, if large enough to be visible to the unassisted eye, can affect both beauty and durability. As most diamonds move between the clarity grades, the beauty is unaffected. However, the price is greatly affected.

To determine a diamond's clarity, it is viewed under 10x magnification by a trained eye. A quality jeweler will have a microscope and invite you to view any inclusions in your diamond.

Rule: Always ask to see your diamond on a microscope (not just a hand-held magnifier), and have the jeweler make a "map" of all the inclusions.
